Community Behind the Curtain

Watch the Video
In Greenwood’s vibrant arts scene, Stephen Gilbert and Lisa Sanders stand out for their dedication to enriching the community through the performing arts. Their passion for community theatre and quality performances have helped make Greenwood a beacon of creativity and inclusivity.

As Executive Directors of the Greenwood Community Theatre and Greenwood Performing Arts, respectively, Stephen Gilbert and Lisa Sanders have worked tirelessly with passion, vision and enthusiasm to make community theater accessible to—and loved by—all.

Stephen, who has served as the Executive Director of Greenwood Community Theatre for twelve years, started out as an unlikely champion for the world of community theater. Without a traditional background in theater, Stephen’s journey began when his children became involved in local productions. His initial participation as a supportive parent quickly evolved into a deeper commitment; he joined the theater board and eventually left his real estate career during the 2007-2008 financial crisis to dedicate his time to the world of live performance art.

With his strong business acumen, Stephen has hired talented artistic professionals, focusing on producing plays of the highest quality. Under his leadership, the Greenwood Community Theatre has gained a reputation as one of the best community theaters in South Carolina. Audiences frequently commend the exceptional performances, which include beloved productions like “The Lion King” and “Frozen.”

However, Stephen and Lisa extend their vision beyond staging plays. They are passionate about using theater as a tool for community engagement and support. Programs like the Penguin Project, which empowers children with disabilities to participate in theatrical productions, and “I Can Dance,” a classical ballet initiative for adults with special needs, highlight the theater’s commitment to inclusivity. The theater’s outreach programs aim to serve at-risk populations and provide accessible cultural experiences to all.

Stephen challenges the misconception that theater is only for “rich old white folks.” He loves the collaborative spirit in Greenwood, where different organizations work together for the betterment of the community. This inclusive approach ensures that the theater not only entertains but also enriches the lives of all community members.

Bringing Professional Performing Arts to Greenwood

Lisa, Executive Director of Greenwood Performing Arts, shares Stephen’s dedication to making the arts accessible to everyone. Established in 1946, Greenwood Performing Arts brings professional touring artists to Greenwood, offering both educational and entertaining experiences to diverse audiences.

Lisa’s journey in the arts began long before she assumed her current role in October 2020. She served on the board of Greenwood Performing Arts for 13 years while working in banking. Her mother gave Lisa early exposure to performing arts and instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for cultural experiences. Viewing her role as a calling, Lisa organized outdoor concerts during the pandemic to support musicians, partnering with Lander University for concerts featuring local artists from the “American Pie” video produced by local filmmaker David Holloway, musician Ashby Stokes and restaurateur TJ Jenks.

One of Lisa’s notable initiatives is the “Spotlight on the Arts” outreach program. This program offers six productions annually, bringing in professional artists to educate and engage community members. Funded by grants, it aims to make performing arts accessible to all, including youth, senior citizens, and residents of assisted living facilities. An upcoming project involves Benjamin Mays Elementary School students writing a song with acclaimed blues musician Mac Arnold, encompassing professional production, branding, and instrumental education. This initiative embodies Lisa’s dedication to nurturing young talent, “one beat at a time, one child at a time.”

Lisa’s deep roots in South Carolina and her love for Greenwood drive her efforts. She praises the town’s easy living, fantastic restaurants, and talented community, all of which contribute to its unique charm. Her collaborations with local organizations, including Uptown Greenwood, underscore her commitment to making Greenwood a thriving cultural hub.

The Importance of Community Theater

The Greenwood Community Theatre and Greenwood Performing Arts are integral to Uptown’s Cultural Arts District, a cornerstone of the town’s cultural identity. These organizations not only provide high-quality entertainment but also foster a sense of community and belonging. Through inclusive programs and outreach initiatives, they ensure that the arts are accessible to all, regardless of background or ability.

Stephen and Lisa exemplify the power of leadership rooted in passion and community spirit. Their work has helped transform Greenwood into a place where the arts flourish, and where everyone has the opportunity to experience the joy and enrichment that the performing arts bring. Together, they continue to inspire and uplift their community, making Greenwood a shining example of what can be achieved when the arts are prioritized and celebrated.
